Highline Library

Building upon the grain study of the 116th St project, the High Line echoes the same principles, raising the North-South grain above-ground, allowing W 19th St to epmhasize its own East-West grain with regard to ground traffic and pedestrians. The proposed design negotiates a shift between these two grains, with structural elements drawing from the presence of the High Line. A central structure houses the books, with stacks arranged North and South with respect to the immense structural presence of the High Line. An array of columns draws on the existing vertical beams, drawing out the space found beneath the existing structure. These columns extend upwards through the stacks, creating three mezzanines of varying privacy. A gap between the High Line and the stacks, while distinguishing the two structures, allows for the circulation of light and sound throughout the library. The glass-box enclosure cuts the library at its edge, allowing it to be understood as a cross-section with respect to the greater structure of the High Line.
